JML Heirs, LLC operates a number of natural resource-based businesses in Michigan, Minnesota and Canada, including timber, mineral and real estate interests. The privately held company is built on the businesses started by founder John M. Longyear in the late 1800s.
Longyear owns and manages about 73,000 acres of forest land in the Upper Peninsula and 92,000 acres of forest land in Canada. Forests are managed for long-term growth and harvest of timber products marketed primarily to regional customers in the United States and Canada, with some veneer and specialty logs sold to foreign customers.
Longyear also owns mineral rights on more than 160,000 acres in Michigan and Wisconsin and nearly 3,000 acres in Minnesota. The Minnesota-based resource will provide raw material for Essar Steel Minnesota, North America's first iron mining through steel processing facility, which broke ground in 2008.
Longyear's corporate headquarters are located in the historic Longyear Building in downtown Marquette, Michigan.
